Steps 1–2: Star ting from the Life Palace, find the triple alliance and four directions
A Zi Wei chart looks overwhelming at first, but mastering the right reading order makes entry not....
In Zi Wei Dou Shu, the most common question I'm asked is:"I have my chart — where do I start." Based on years of reading experience, the first step is always to find the Life Palace: confirm which primary star is in it, and whether auspicious or affliction stars share the palace. The primary star determines your personality baseline. The auxiliary stars determine whether energy is amplified or blocked. Therefore, simply understanding the star combination in the Life Palace allows you to grasp a person's most essential personality characteristics.
The second step is to examine the triadic allies: the palace directly opposite the Life Palace is the Migration Palace. While the two at 90-degree angles are the Wealth Palace and Career Palace. These four palaces together form the basic structure of your career, financial fortune, and personal energy. If these four palaces have more auspicious stars and Hua Lu, the overall structure is generally stronger. Conversely, if Hua Ji concentrates in these palaces, more attention is needed in the corresponding life domains.
Steps 3–4: Overlay the Major Cycle and confirm the Four Transformations
The third step is to confirm which major cycle you are currently in (use the Five-Element Phase to calculate the starting age, then find the current major cycle palace). The star configuration in the major cycle Life Palace is the fortune baseline for your current decade — because the major cycle reflects your present energy state, it is more descriptive of "your current situation" than the natal chart. In my own readings, I typically look at the major cycle first, then cross-reference the natal chart — this approach makes it far easier to identify the key points.
The fourth step is to confirm the four transformations: first the natal four transformations, then the major cycle four transformations, and finally the annual four transformations. Pay particular attention to which palace Hua Ji flies into. The reason to specifically note Hua Ji is that the life dimension represented by that palace is the one requiring the most careful attention during this period. Hua Ji is not a bad thing — it is a reminder.
- All three layers of four transformations (natal + major cycle + annual cycle) landing simultaneously in the same palace: energy is most concentrated, making major events in the current year most likely.
- Only the annual four transformations flying in alone: the influence is shorter-term — special attention only needed this year.
The fifth step, and most important: integrated reading — don't stare at one palace or one star and draw conclusions. The chart is a complete system, and because every palace influences every other palace, looking at one place alone easily leads to misjudgment. A palace that looks problematic often has another palace providing a remedy. Similarly, a major cycle that looks difficult may also have annual cycle support making things not as bad as imagined.
