Based on the large number of charts I have analyzed, many people's first reaction is to assume they "have no fate pattern" or "lack a defined personality." But the truth is exactly the opposite. An empty Life Palace is a perfectly normal phenomenon. Precisely for this reason, Zi Wei Dou Shu has a very clear rule for handling it: borrow from the opposing palace — use the primary stars of the Travel Palace as the stand-in for the Life Palace in interpretation.

Zi Wei Dou Shu has fourteen primary stars distributed across twelve palaces, since the number of stars (14) exceeds the number of palaces (12), one might expect every palace to have a star. However, the arrangement of primary stars is fixed and calculated based on birth year and lunar month, resulting in the following: some palaces will inevitably have only one primary star, and there will always be one or two palaces with no primary stars at all. Only supporting stars, malefic stars, or blank space. This is the origin of the "empty palace" — not an anomaly in the natal chart, but a normal structural feature.
The occurrence of an empty Life Palace is not rare — roughly one in three people will encounter it. Not whether there is a primary star, but knowing what to do next.
Borrow from the opposite palace? The logic of the Travel Palace
In the twelve-palace opposing-palace system of Zi Wei Dou Shuthe palace directly opposite the Life Palace is the Travel Palace. When the Life Palace is empty, you look toward the Travel Palace, find the primary stars there,"borrow" them back, and use their qualities to interpret the personality and life axis of the Life Palace.
The word "borrow" is very apt — the energy does exist. It simply needs to manifest through the external environment (travel/movement) before it can appear. It is for this reason that, in my chart readings, I have observed a consistent trait in people with an empty Life Palace: their personality characteristics become more pronounced when they engage with the outside world and leave familiar environments. In their hometown or familiar social circle they may seem ordinary, but once they go out, change environments, and encounter new things, the energy of their fate pattern truly unfolds.

- Advanced tip: People with an empty Life Palace who borrow from the Travel Palace must pay special attention to the trajectory of the Travel Palace's major cycle during major and annual cycle analysis — because it is equivalent to their "Life Palace major cycle" — its importance is higher than the Travel Palace is for most people.
Tian Fu borrowed at peak brightness
The borrowed main star is not uniformly strong — its peak or diminished brightness in the Travel Palace directly determines how clearly the fate pattern is defined. From years of chart-reading experience, a borrowed star at peak brightness produces a vivid, clearly defined personality with a sharp sense of direction. A borrowed star in a diminished state lacks sufficient energy — the personality becomes more ambiguous and easily sways with the environment.

- Po Jun borrowed in diminished state: Reform instinct is present but lacks a stable outlet; life in the early years tends toward greater ups and downs.
